The Cliff Banana from India. The pseudostem is swollen at the base and tapers quickly on plants that can reach 3m. Leaves are large, stiff and glaucous. Enjoys plenty of warmth and water during the summer months. Keep on the dry side during the colder months and above 10C.

Germination instructions

Special treatment is required to break dormancy. Soak seeds in warm warm for 48 hours and then sow on the surface of a sterile seed compost, before covering the seeds with vermiculite. Keep compost moist but not overly wet and maintain humidity levels so that compost does not dry out. Keep in a well lit spot.

Ensete seeds require a constant daily temp cycle of around 25-30C to germinate. Germination is erratic - some seeds may start to germinate from around 4 weeks whilst others can take a number of months. Once germinated, keep the seedlings at the same temperature until they are around 10cms to 15cms tall before potting on individually into 9cm pots for growing on.
